Abstract
Recomended practices for file naming. Your future self will thank you.


We’ve all been there. Blood pressure rising as we are searching through our files for the final version of that report… Is it final-final-v3-edits, FINAL, or final_report ? 🤯 Or how about that Google Drive you share with your colleagues that in reality is a black hole that no one wants to venture into alone?

There are many sophisticated organization strategies out there, but following Julie Andrew’s advice: “let’s start at the beginning a very good place to start.” When you begin to save, you start with Year, Month, Day!


According to the Librarians at Princeton there are several elements to consider when naming your files. They include:

The next step is to agree (with your self or collaborators) upon a convention based on elements that are most important to the project.

For Example

When writing and editing my thesis with my advisor, I used the naming convention “Project name” + “Last name” + “Thesis” + “Date” which looked like Insitu_Filter_Marks_Thesis_2020_10_20.docx.
